"I am thirsty."

John 19:28-30
28 Later, knowing that all was now completed, and so that the Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, "I am thirsty." 29 A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus' lips. 30 When he had received the drink, Jesus said, "It is finished." With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

Thoroughness is a good quality to have. He dots every "i" and crosses every "t" many a person has exclaimed when talking about someone who takes every task given to them seriously. It's a good thing when a job is done correctly, because when it's not it can have dire consequences. It can cost a person money, get them in trouble, break a product or maybe even hurt someone. You want someone who followed all the steps while building a house, filing your taxes or performing a surgery.

Jesus fulfilling His commitment to humanity and setting out to glorify them was very thorough. Throughout the Old Testament, many prophecies were made about what would happen when their Heavenly Father came to be with them. And up to the very end of His life, Jesus checked each thing He had to do off His list and He performed them all down to the most seemingly insignificant detail.

This was His way of telling us, I am God, come to be with you, for the fulfillment of scripture. It also lets us know He was truly triumphant over sin. Jesus thirsted, not because a Psalm written long before He was born said He needed to. He thirsted because He was true man. The roof of His mouth was dry. This meant He had lived perfectly as true man, to the very end, therefore allowing Him to be a sacrifice for us without blemish.

All of these things happened so we can look to God's Word and know that scripture was fulfilled. The fulfillment of what was said in those Psalms comes as no surprise down to the very drink that was made available to Him. The lots cast for His clothing were also no surprise, but this too was a fulfillment of scripture, in the same way He had no control over what those soldiers would do with His clothing, He had no control over His human need of thirst.

Jesus wasn't just crossing off a checklist for His benefit, He did it for us, so that we can believe He was the true Savior. He did it so we can know that our sins were forgiven. He did it so we have a Heavenly home with Him for eternity. That's why when these things happened, He could look over His earthly ministry and confirm, "It is finished."
